Stretches

Passive and active stretches may be carried out in your treatment sessions for increased flexibility and mobility.

More advanced and effective techniques often used during our treatments, to aid rehabilitation and improve motor-performance, are:

  • Muscle Energy Techniques (MET):  Most commonly defined as a “contract-relax stretching”, MET is a hands-on therapy with active participation by both therapist and client, using gentle muscle isometric contractions (muscle contraction with no external motion) and breathing to relax and lengthen muscles and normalise joint motion.
  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF): PNF is very similar to MET, as it uses an isometric contraction to achieve the desired range of motion. The difference is the force of the contraction and in PNF, there is no breathing pattern involved.

To ascertain which areas to focus on and help provide an overview of where imbalances in the body are located, we perform postural assessments before and after all treatments.

The therapist will prescribe tailored stretch exercises, to relax and lengthen taut, restricted muscles.

All stretches provided are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
